The consumer price index (CPI) rose
0.1 percent for the September 2012 quarter, the Tokelau
National Statistics Office said today.
“The increase in the CPI reflects higher alcoholic beverage and tobacco prices, and higher furnishings, household equipment, and routine household maintenance prices.
“These increases were countered by cheaper food and non-alcoholic beverages prices, particularly cheaper potatoes, and milk powder,” National Statistician Kele Lui said.
Prices for alcoholic beverages and tobacco rose 1.6 percent in the September 2012 quarter, reflecting higher prices for cigarettes (up 2.1 percent), and beer (up 0.9 percent).
Furnishings, household equipment, and routine maintenance prices rose 1.0 percent. This reflected higher prices for disinfectant (up 35.2 percent), refrigerators (up 5.4 percent), and nails (up 5.0 percent).
In the September 2012 quarter, prices were lower for potatoes (down 31.9 percent), milk powder (down 13.2 percent), toilet paper (down 16.0 percent), long-life milk (down 10.2 percent), and sugar (down 7.8 percent).
The CPI measures the rate of price change of goods and services purchased by Tokelau households. The September 2012 quarter CPI, is Tokelau’s first ever CPI publication.
“The Government of Tokelau is both pleased, and proud that the Tokelau National Statistics Office has released this information.
“The CPI provides valuable information for the government, and will help us to make informed decisions, and measure changes in the cost of living. This is a historical release,” said the General Manager for the Office of the Council for the Ongoing Government of Tokelau, Joe Suveinakama.
Mr Suveinakama also expressed thanks to Statistics New Zealand. “The Tokelau National Statistics Office has been closely supported by Statistics NZ in setting up the systems and processes required to run the CPI. Statistics NZ is a close friend of Tokelau, and we are very grateful.”
