Dr. Ashrawi conducts separate diplomatic meetings in Ramallah

RAMALLAH, PALESTINE (June 13, 2017) -- PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi met with the Russian Head of Mission to Palestine Dr. Aydar R. Aganin at the PLO Headquarters in Ramallah.

Dr. Ashrawi affirmed the historic ties between Palestine and Russia, and she expressed her gratitude to Russia for its consistent support of Palestinian self-determination, freedom and human rights. In that context, both parties reviewed strengthening the foundations of joint cooperation between Palestine and Russia and the role of Russia in peacemaking.

The discussion focused on deteriorating conditions on the ground and Israel’s continued breach of international law, including the expropriation of Palestinian land and resources, the escalation of its illegal settlement activities in and around Jerusalem and the blatant demographic, cultural, religious, and political transformation of Jerusalem, as well as other persistent violations.

Both parties assessed regional and global developments, and in that view, Dr. Ashrawi stressed the importance of multilateral engagement and the involvement of the P5+1 and Arab countries: “There is an urgent need for the international community to exhibit the political will necessary to end the military occupation and to eliminate the grave injustices suffered by the Palestinians. We call on global leaders to undertake new political and multilateral strategies based on international law and conventions, clear terms of reference and a binding timeline and concrete steps to end the occupation.”
