Weather Workshop Five Day Forecast

The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Sunday.

Situation: A large but slowly weakening anticyclone over the Tasman Sea is drifting northeast and should be centred just north of the North Island at noon tomorrow. This will allow a northwest flow to strengthen over South Island areas ahead of a trough, which is likely to move onto the south of the country early Friday. The weekend sees the trough crossing New Zealand with a southwest flow following.

NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE and TAUPO: Cloudy periods in the north and west with a few showers from Auckland to Taranaki later tomorrow. From Bay of Plenty to Taupo continuing fine and frosty. Cloudy in most places Friday with drizzly showers and northwest winds but about Bay of PLenty remaining dry. A period of rain everywhere Saturday then easing to showers from the south. Becoming fine Sunday. Remaining showers clearing later in the day from the eastern ranges of Bay of Plenty and Taupo.

WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Mainly fine today. Cloudy tomorrow with a few late showers. Friday sees drizzly rain becoming extensive later. Rain easing to showers Saturday then clearing skies Sunday.

GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Fine today and tomorrow. Dry with increasing high cloudiness Friday. Northwesterlies strengthening south of Napier. Rain spreading north Saturday then a few showers with a southwest change. Coastal showers clearing Sunday, fine weather expected elsewhere.

WELLINGTON: Fine today. Cloud increasing tomorrow with a few drizzle patches after dark. Patchy rain becoming persistent Friday with strong northerlies. Rain easing to showers Saturday, a southerly change later. Showers clearing Sunday.

NELSON: Fine today then increasing cloud tomorrow with late rain to the western ranges. Drizzle in most places Friday. Widespread rain Saturday then clearing at night. Fine and frosty Sunday.

MARLBOROUGH and CANTERBURY: Fine today apart from high cloud. Tomorrow rain about the main divide but further east dry. Expect northwest conditions Friday with brief rain spreading from the west then late at night cold southwesterlies and showers developing about South Canterbury. Showery conditions elsewhere early Saturday then skies should start to clear from the south. Mainly fine inland Sunday but showers likely to persist in coastal places.

BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Patchy rain about Fiordland spreading to central Westland today, elsewhere cloudy. Tomorrow rain more widespread with persistent falls south of the glaciers. Rain again in most places Friday. Heavy falls possible over Fiordland. Saturday sees rain becoming confined to Buller with a clearance to most other areas, however showers persisting about the southern fiords. The odd shower again in the far south Sunday otherwise a mix of fine and cloudy weather.

OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: Areas of high cloud today. Tomorrow rain about the western ranges and south coast. Brief falls spreading elsewhere later. A period of widespread rain Friday then showery later as cold southwesterlies slowly spread north. Snow about the ranges to low levels at night. Showers becoming confined to the south coast during Saturday with clearing skies elsewhere and frosty inland at night. Showery in the south again Sunday otherwise fine and frosty.

CHATHAM ISLANDS: Cloudy with a few light showers today and tomorrow. Cloudy and dry with northwesterlies strengthening Friday. Rain Saturday then colder with southwesterlies from afternoon. Cold and showery Sunday.
