Life made safer for Chch's walkers and cyclists

Life made safer for Christchurch's walkers and cyclists

The lives of walkers and cyclists in and around Christchurch will be made safer with the approval of funding for seven walking and cycling projects.

The projects, which have been put forward by the Christchurch City Council, amount to nearly $380,000 of Transfund funding.

The projects are: · a cycleway along Annex Road · improved cycleways for Avondale Bridge · traffic signal installation along Blighs Road to allow cyclists and walkers to cross safely · Burnside cycleway, to improve the safety of cyclists and walkers in the vicinity of Burnside High School · completion of the Colombo Street cycleway · St Andrews-Heaton cycleway to improve the safety of cyclists and walkers in the vicinity of St Andrews and Heaton schools · The connection of two existing cycle lanes on Strickland Street

Chairperson David Stubbs said the Transfund Board was pleased to fund these walking and cycling projects as they contributed to the general public health, improved the safety of walkers and cyclists, and assisted in congestion relief.

The funding was approved at the Board's March meeting. It comes from Transfund's Walking and Cycling output group, which provides funding to activities relating to the promotion of walking and cycling and for stand-alone cycling or pedestrian projects that do not otherwise comprise an integral part of a road construction project.
