Council to now evaluate final redevelopment proposals for Britomart

Bluewater Consortium and Melview Developments have submitted to Council their final proposals for the Britomart heritage precinct redevelopment, Auckland City Mayor Hon John Banks said today.

Both contenders’ proposals will now go through an evaluation process, which could result in a final decision being made by full council as early as the end of October.

Mr Banks stressed the importance of the final evaluation process, reiterating that Britomart is the largest heritage, transport and urban renewal project ever undertaken by a local authority in New Zealand.

“The restoration of the surrounding late Victorian and early Edwardian warehouse buildings will return the city’s bygone trading area to its former glory and provide a huge boost to downtown Auckland,” he said.

The Mayor expected both proposals would incorporate exciting plans for the 5.2-hectare low-rise heritage precinct, which will be vibrant, safe and include a rich mix of activities.

At Britomart’s official opening on 25 July, Mr Banks announced Bluewater Consortium and Melview Developments as the final contenders. Four candidates were selected in February and asked to supply Council with detailed plans for the precinct.
