Mangere CAB Welcomes Volunteers from WYCCO Charitable Trust

Mangere Citizens Advice Bureau has pleasure in welcoming volunteers from the Women Youth & Child Care Organisation (WYCCO).

CAB Manager Patricia Koekemoer says, “WYCCO is a non-profit organisation dedicated to helping new migrants from all ethnic groups. They have particular expertise in dealing with the Indian community, with a number of WYCCO members being fluent in several Indian languages. An Indian Ethnic Advisor is available at the Bureau on Wednesday Evenings.

“The organisation is dedicated to helping women and children who are victims of domestic violence and is able to arrange safe houses for victims when required,” says Ms Koekemoer.

WYCCO runs a Life-Skills programme that is designed to increase self-esteem in women and empower them psychologically and economically.

They offer a counselling service which aims to strengthen and improve family life by offering support, at the same time taking into consideration the cultural values of each family.

WYCCO has a community kitchen where unemployed women are able to learn new skills to assist the family’s financial situation.

Other services provided by WYCCO include;

assisting new immigrants to put together CV’s and prepare for employment interviews help for migrants with drivers licence tests halfway home for “at risk” youth child care centre English classes anger management for men and women financial empowerment for house-bound women.

Future plans include expanding their services in the Manukau region and opening a stall at the Mangere Markets on Saturdays in the next few weeks to sell Indian delicacies. Eventually it is hoped that the stall could be extended to sell craft and clothing.

“We are delighted that this group of dedicated people have added to their work load by becoming CAB volunteers at our Mangere Bureau. They are doing a tremendous job in working with the Indian community,” says Patricia Koekemoer.
