Dangerous Goods Prohibited from SH1 Tunnels

Signs informing motorists of Transit New Zealand’s Dangerous Goods Bylaw, passed last year, are to be installed this month.

The bylaw applies to both the Terrace and Mount Victoria tunnels and means that vehicles can’t carry goods such as flammable gasses. Oversized vehicles along with walking and cycling, except on the footpath in the Mount Victoria Tunnel, are also prohibited.

Safety engineer Stanley Chesterfield says the bylaw reinforced what was common sense to most people.

“The signs will act as a reminder to those already aware of the bylaw and to inform those who aren’t.”

The dangerous goods aspect of the bylaw applies mainly to truck drivers, most of who tend to use Aotea Quay and around the bays anyway, Mr Chesterfield added.
