Council allocates over $80,000 for crime prevention in Manukau

Manukau City Council’s Community Safety Committee yesterday approved funding of $82,812.50 to 10 Manukau community groups providing crime prevention programmes within the city.

The successful projects reflect a wide range of programmes across Manukau, each targeting different types of crime, criminals and their victims.

The funding includes: $8,500 to Botany Crime Watch Patrol to help maintain and increase community patrols $5,500 to the Nirvana Solace Centre for Women Trust towards payment of rent to support mature women through family violence, abuse and physiological abuse $15,752.35 to the Turehou Maori Wardens Ki Otara Charitable Trust to help train Maori Wardens and support a new Shopping Centre Patrol Team $21,913.56 to the Mangere Genesis Youth Project. The project aims to prevent youth involvement in crime and ensure that young offenders do not re-offend. The money will help fund a youth worker.

“The Community Safety Committee is anxious to work with those community groups that assist at grass roots level to make our community a safer and more pleasant place to live. I am very pleased that Council is able to offer these grants, which will help make a real difference to communities across Manukau,” says Councillor Dick Quax, Chair of the Community Safety Committee.

The funding for community crime prevention initiatives was agreed by Council as part of the 2004/5 Annual Plan.
