Committee give go ahead for Manukau RSA memorial

Committee give go ahead for Manukau RSA memorial

Manukau City Council’s Community Development Committee has given approval for part of Manukau Memorial Gardens to be transformed into a Returned Services Association memorial.

The Committee will recommend to Council that part of the RSA burial area be declared a reserve, allowing the RSA to take forward their plans to create a memorial on the site.

The memorial will serve as an educational area for the community, for school visits and for use on ceremonial occasions. A “contemplation area”, enclosed by four granite slabs engraved with battle images, will be a key feature of the memorial.

A reserve status will mean that the RSA will be able to apply for assistance funding for the project under the Council’s Facilities Partnership Scheme.

Cllr John Walker, Chair of the Committee, said:

“Since the memorial was first proposed, the Community Development Committee has been very keen to help the RSA make it a reality. Our recommendation to Council is the first step towards achieving this”

“The proposed memorial will be a truly special place for people to visit.”
