'Half Of Kapiti's Prime Open Space Under Threat

'Half Of Kapiti's Prime Open Space Will Go Forever'

The Paraparaumu Airport Coalition says a new Kapiti Coast District Council report shows that half Paraparaumu Airport's open space will have disappeared if the plans of the Auckland and developers go ahead.

The plans, which go before a KCDC meeting on Thursday this week,
seek a change to the Kapiti District plan to allow more development at the Airport.

Mike Woods, of the Airport Coalition, says this will mean massive development for commercial and light industrial use, completely unrelated to the aviation.

Mr Woods says a new 'Airport Mixed Use' precinct will allow for 'big box' retail stores, a petrol station and even a supermarket.

"None of these businesses have anything to do with flying," Mr Woods says.

He also slates the Council report for ignoring the major effects of this development on Kapiti Road, which is already gridlocked at peak times.

The Airport Coalition, Mr Woods says, believes that developer Mr Noel Robinson's claims that he has 99 per cent support will be turned on their head when the devastating implications of the KCDC report sink in.
