DCM Welcomes Kate

Kate Steele has joined the Downtown Community Ministry team as part of a third year placement for her Massey University Social Work Degree.

She will be at DCM for 13 weeks and supervised by DCM’s Community Social Worker Dougal Spier.

Kate says, “I was looking for a community based organisation doing effective work amongst the issues of homelessness and poverty so I came here”.

She says her aim during her placement is to observe DCM social workers relating to clients and how we as an organisation manage the variety of work we do.

By the end of her placement Kate hopes to learn enough to put into practice everything she’s observed.

Kate says after growing up with politically aware parents it’s no surprise she’s working in the social sector.

“It’s probably because of them that I’ve been so interested in the social issues around poverty,” she says.

Director Stephanie McIntyre says, “Kate brings with her a real interest in the issues DCM deals with. We’re very happy to have her join us.”
