Edgeware Pool is Back

Edgeware Pool is Back

Last night at a community forum organised by the St Albans Residents' Association, Christchurch 2021 released a series of commitments to the local community around bringing back the pool.

"The community backs this pool, and 2021 backs this community", said Darel Hall. "The St Albans community can get their pool back with a 2021 Council".

The current Council agreed to give the community 13 months to raise the money needed for a new pool and community facility. The lack of support and views expressed publicly by Councillors mean, many believe, the current Council has set up the community to fail.

"2021 is rebuilding the relationship of trust with the St Albans community", said Megan Woods. "Genuine partnership between Council and community is required to make this happen", Woods said.

Both Hall and Woods pointed out that their position had been reached after a constructive meeting with the Friends of Edgeware group. Both applauded the group and community¹s commitment to working to a solution. ³This election should not be about re- litigating the Edgeware Pool decision, but rather about working with the community to find mutually agreeable solutions², said Hall.

"This is not about throwing ratepayer money at the problem, but rather about listening to the concerns of the community and focusing on how we can make this happen together. It is important to realise this group is not looking for money for the new pool, but they are looking for a commitment from their elected representatives."

"Current councillors mouthing platitudes of good intent have not been matched by action of substance", said Darel Hall.

"That needs to change. We need Councillors with the courage of their convictions, the ability to stand with their community, and the vigour to make their plans work".
