Mayoral candidate slams council for ignoring boy racers

Mayoral candidate Byron Clark has criticised the Christchurch City Council over their actions against street racers in the city.

"Every year we hear hollow promises of reactionary plans to crack down on street racing," Clark said. "In reality, bans and by-laws are unenforceable and are unlikely to make the problem go away. There have been hoons on our roads for many years."

Mr Clark, who is a candidate for the Workers' Party, said the council should be putting more effort into providing safe and affordable facilities for motorsport.

He said: "Motorsport venues are prohibitively expensive to use, and are mostly limited to organized motorsport events. The burnout pad at Ruapuna was promising, but that's gone now."

"The council should provide regular motorsport events which are attractive and don't cost the earth."

The Workers' Party is a socialist political party active throughout New Zealand. They are fielding four mayoral candidates in the upcoming local body elections.
