NZ Youth Jazz Orchestra Play Upper Hutt

The 2008 New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra play a concert of traditional and contemporary big band music at Expressions, Genesis Theatre on Saturday 11 October at 8pm. Twenty one young musicians selected from all over New Zealand have come together in Wellington under visiting musical director Bruce Paulson. Bruce is an accomplished trombone player, now Associate professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. He has worked extensively as a session musician recording with Frank Sinatra, Diana Reeves, Michel Legrand , Natalie Cole and he has been a member of the Buddy Rich Band.

Andrew Bruce from the Hutt Valley is the selected pianist and will be playing the new Steinway Concert Grand piano as part of the concert.

The eighteen piece band is joined by three vocalists.

Selection for the orchestra for each musician comes after a rigorous process whereby they are viewed on video playing their set pieces before the final orchestra is selected.

The annual jazz musical school is now well established and it gives young musicians and their audiences a chance to share a night of top quality big band music.

The programme will include material by Duke Ellington, Count Basie ,Woody Herman and Oliver Nelson.

The event is organised by the New Zealand Jazz Foundation.

The concert is being recorded by Radio NZ for future broadcast.
