A traffic-stopping approach to training
A training programme developed by InfraTrain New Zealand for Integrated Traffic Solutions (ITS) in Mount Wellington, Auckland, has been given the thumbs up by Roading New Zealand.
InfraTrain put together the tailor-made programme as part of an initiative by ITS to upskill their staff. The programme resulted in eleven staff achieving qualifications including National Certificates in Civil Infrastructure –General Introductory Skills and National Certificates in Health, Safety and Environment (Operations), which meets the requirements of the Operate Safe Silver Card.
InfraTrain Training Advisor Annette de Wet worked with the trainees as a group to determine their training needs and set up the programme.
Mike Stutchbury of BeSafe Training Limited was brought in by InfraTrain to deliver training for skills in key areas including First Aid, health and safety, driving skills and traffic control. Tony Williams of Road and Traffic Education Centre was brought in to deliver the driving unit standards.
Chris Olsen, Chief Executive of Roading New Zealand, says, “Few people in the country hold Operate Safe Silver Cards – these trainees are right up there. I take my hat off to them, and congratulate them on their hard work”
Annette de Wet says, “These qualifications have given our trainees a real sense of achievement, and are an important first step on the career ladder for them. They can feel very proud of their success.
“ITS have shown a great commitment to upskilling their staff. We acknowledge their support, particularly Business Manager Gareth Mappledoram, Department Manager Traffic Services Wayne Harding, and Traffic Supervisor Dave Hill, who have worked closely with the trainees to support them during the process.
“A further 25 trainees will take part in the same programme over the coming months, and we hope to roll it out at the Wellington branch later in the year.”
Annette de Wet says that the success of the programme demonstrates the benefits of industry training for companies such as ITS. She says, “InfraTrain qualifications set the benchmark for industry best practice. Using qualified staff can contribute to increased productivity, lower operating and maintenance costs, and improved health and safety records. This not only benefits individual companies, but raises standards in the industry as a whole.”
