Rotorua District Youth Council for 2010 selected

ROTORUA 19.11.09:  Seventeen young people representing local high schools, intermediate schools and tertiary education have been selected to serve on the 2010 Rotorua District Youth Council (RDYC). 

Rotorua District Council youth projects officer Jill Campbell says the calibre of applications for this year’s youth council was very high meaning the five selectors had been able to choose a fantastic team.
 
“We now look forward to working with the new group. They have a lot of great challenges ahead for 2010.

“But even before the new year kicks off, their first get-together will be a team building exercise aimed at getting to know the district and involving participation in next month’s Amazing Race organised by the current year’s youth council.

“The new youth council has a few teams entered and if they win a top placing they will donate their prizemoney back to the community.”

Ms Campbell says the diversity of the new group, which includes Maori, Pakeha, Chinese, Indian and Cook Island cultures means the young people will look at issues from different perspectives.

The RDYC will begin their first year in office with a training weekend in February.

The 2010 Rotorua District Youth Council are Richard Todd, Shawn McManus, Liam Grady Walsh (John Paul College); Hannah Dooley, Jackie Liu, Dominique Werahiko (Rotorua Lakes High); Murali Magesan, Mila Guy (Western Heights High School); Terewai Henare Kopua, Michael Mahima (Rotorua Boys’ High School); Jana Topia, Katie Wilson (Rotorua Girls’ High School); Nicole Maandonks, Matthew Fitzgerald (Reporoa College); Tania Tapsell (Waiariki Institute of Technology); Reade Nikora (Rotorua Intermediate); and Shaye-Lafon Viti (Kaitao Intermediate).
