New projects bring road safety benefits and improved connections

Auckland City Council’s transport committee has given the green light to several projects providing improved connectivity and road safety benefits.

The committee endorsed two CBD transport projects for completion in the current financial year – the Mayoral Dr / Wakefield St intersection pedestrian safety  upgrade and Wellesley St to Grafton Rd  pedestrian and cycleway project.

Transport Committee chair Councillor Ken Baguley says both projects enhance CBD connectivity around the CBD, specifically around the busy educational precincts.

“The Wellesley St and -Grafton Rd improvements have broader benefits through improved safety at intersections along the route, and better infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians.

Both projects have strong support from the council’s Learning Quarter partners (AUT and the University of Auckland) because of their pedestrian-related benefits, safety improvements and enhanced links.

In another initiative to support cycling around the city, the committee supported the Great Urban Rides concept by approving the provision of signage to promote the three routes (Ponsonby Heritage, Waitemata Harbour, and Maungawhau Volcanic).
