Earning a Patch on our Turf

The Square in Palmerston North could become a hunting ground for out of town youths. Violent crime and robbery are stepping stones to “earning” their patch, and The Square, late at night with inebriated carefree people, has presented an opportunity for youth to further violent behaviour. The Safe City Patrols are themselves using the well lit shop areas and avoiding The Square itself.

Information has been provided to Palmerston North and Manawatu advocate, Paul O’Brien, which supports that out of town youths are likely to use The Square to further their gang career. Following several approaches from the sporting community, Mr O’Brien researched these concerns with Hastings Mayor, Lawrence Yule, Whanganui District Council and Palmerston North Police Commander, Pat Hancock. Mr O’Brien received confirmation that Whanganui gangs had relocated to other areas outside of our city.

A by-law prohibits the wearing of gang patches in Whanganui and a similar by law was being considered by the Hastings District Council, however they have now placed the matter in the hands of Local Government New Zealand.

Commander Pat Hancock says he supports offers from the business community to assist in any way to enhance the safety of The Square after hours. He confirmed we currently have no gang issues in the city, but that we must continue to be diligent.

Mr O’Brien is working with community and business groups to ensure that Police are kept informed.
