Anne FitzSimon – Nelson City Council Candidate
Commuter Cyclist Facilities
Wednesday, 29 September 2010
The Nelson community was disappointed missing out on the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) Model Community’s funding for walking and cycling; down but not out.
Following on from the successful announcement in August for the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails funding from the New Zealand Cycle Trail Project, it is excellent news to here NZTA announce the approval of funding for the Richmond Deviation Cycleway.
“Nelson and Tasman are now on track towards becoming New Zealand’s ‘slow travel’ all year round tourism destination” says Nelson City Council Candidate, Anne FitzSimon.
This is the opportunity for Nelson City Council to act more strategically by providing better facilities for commuter cyclists in the Nelson CBD.
“With greater number of commuter cyclists anticipated into Nelson on the completion of the Richmond Deviation, Nelson is overdue for some world class cycle facilities” says Ms FitzSimon.
The Superloo in the Montgomery Square provides the perfect base to create a covered and secure cycle cage for cycle commuters.
“Many businesses in Nelson CBD are unable to provide secure cycle parking, showers, and change facilities for commuter cyclists. A commuter cycle facility would also provide free showers and lockers for commuter cyclists arriving before 10am. As the superloo is already staffed, the facility will be easy to manage” says Ms FitzSimon.
