Light rail group greets ³breakthrough²

³The election of Celia Wade-Brown as Mayor signals a breakthrough for better public transport in Wellington and the region.² says Brian Jameson, chair of light rail lobby group Trans-Action.

³In her campaign Celia Wade-Brown made a pledge to put in place the infrastructure that will give Wellington a high quality integrated public transport system.²

Celia is committed to introducing light rail (modern trams) from Wellington station to the airport by 2020.

³Because light rail can to be integrated directly into the suburban rail network (as tram-trains) there is the prospect, in the longer term, of being able to take a tram-train from the Hutt or Porirua through the CBD to the Airport without changing. This would be an enormous step up for Wellington.²

³It is 15 years since the City Council commissioned a report which proved that tram-train is feasible and economical. After the years of denial it looks as though we at last have a mandate for achievement² concluded Mr Jameson.
