Council opens Pike River condolence book

Wellington City Council is inviting members of the public to sign a condolence book for the loved ones of the men who died in the Pike River coal mine.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown said she wants to pass on to the people of Greymouth and the surrounding district that they are in the thoughts and prayers of the people of Wellington .

The pages will be available for messages in the foyer of the main Council building in Wakefield Street from Monday until Christmas, after which they will be bound into a book to be sent to Greymouth.

“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the friends and families – the parents, wives, girlfriends, children and siblings – of the 29 men who lost their lives,” Mayor Wade-Brown said.

The Pike River Official Remembrance Service will be held in Greymouth next Thursday, 2 December.
