Flavell and Horan happy with performances at IPC Athletics

Having overcome a slight injury, Wellington¹s Kate Horan was ³more than happy² with her fourth place in the T44 200m event at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch today.

Horan¹s time of 29.17sec was just over a second behind winner, Maria Amelie Lefur, of France. The Wellingtonian did have the satisfaction of beating home the highly ranked American April Holmes. She missed a medal by 0.21secs,

Horan will compete in the 100m final at 2.45pm tomorrow.

Auckland¹s Joe Flavell was another who was satisfied with his morning¹s work. Although not a medal winner, he did manage to record four personal best throws in the F42 shot put.

Warming up with a throw of 10.61m, just outside his best, his next five throws were 11.01m, 10.47m, 10.93m, 11.01m and 11.17m.

Surprisingly, in a competition of this intensity, Flavell¹s best two throws were his last two. He finished seventh in the competition won by Russia¹s Maxim Narozhnyy with a throw of 14.23m, just outside the world record.

One who was not too happy with his effort was Opotiki¹s Matthew Lack in the 1500m T54 race. Well positioned throughout, he was unable to sprint with his more experienced rivals over the final 200m.

Horan is New Zealand¹s only representative tomorrow.
