Better Citizens For Tomorrow
Half a century of youth development training, adventure on the high seas and service discipline will be celebrated in Nelson Tuesday May 10 by past and present members of the TS Talisman Sea Cadet Unit at a special 50th Anniversary Parade.

“The 50th takes place at an auspicious moment as TS Talisman is now being recognised nationally as the biggest Sea Cadet unit in New Zealand,” said Unit Commander, Sub Lieutenant Milo Coldren.

1961 and Nelson became the first city outside of a metropolitan centre to have a Sea Cadet Unit. Lieutenant Commander W. Strong talking then about the vision for the Nelson Unit said “it will help today’s youth become better citizens for tomorrow.”

“Our mission statement today, to encourage and inspire youth in their discovery of who they are, what they are capable of and how to work with others, acknowledges changes in our society but still identifies with the Unit’s original intent,” said Sub Lieutenant, Milo Coldren.

Nearly 700 young men and women have served in the Unit since its founding, winning distinction for TS Talisman at regattas and competitions and recently by claiming the 2010 South Island Sailing Trophy and second in Drill at last year’s National Regatta.

The TS Talisman unit drew its name from two historic vessels; a sailing scow that sailed the Nelson and Golden Bay coastline and a World War II T class submarine.

Former TS Talisman cadets, their parents and caregivers, officers and supporters are invited to the 50th Anniversary Parade Tuesday May 10th at the Navy League Hall, 24 Harley Street, Nelson at 7pm.
