Tree inspections following aftershock

Christchurch City Council arborists are currently undertaking inspections of trees in the Botanic Gardens, Hagley park, Central City riverbanks, Avon and Heathcote riverbanks and in the high use parks in the eastern suburbs.

Some mature trees need to be removed where cracking and slumping is present in the root zone of the tree.

Arborists are at present working on a significant willow along the Park Terrace riverbank (opposite 76 Park Terrace) that has sustained serious structural damage to its trunk following the Monday 13 June aftershock. Council arborists are working to retain this significant willow, however to maintain public safety from a large section of the tree failing, a large proportion of the canopy must be removed.
