The 5km Greytown Trail will officially open for cyclists and walkers on Sunday 6 November 2011, with a fun day for all ages called the 'Greytown Rail Ride Riot'.

The event celebrates the culmination of two years of work by the volunteers of the Greytown Trails Trust and strong community support, to develop the former Greytown-Woodside branch rail line, which operated from 1880 to 1953 and has been an unused paper road until recently. The flat, fully fenced route runs from south Greytown to Woodside Station (on the Wellington to Wairarapa rail line) at the foot of the scenic Tararua mountains, forming a 10km round trip through pastures, avenues of heritage oak trees, native plantings and tranquil picnic spots.

The 'Rail Ride Riot' will feature slow biking; best dressed dog-on-a-leash; and best decorated bike competitions; lolly scrambles and a sausage sizzle.

T he Greytown Trail links with quiet backstreets of Greytown, and is easily accessible to another newly established cycleway, running from Greytown's Udy St to the Waiohine River. The T rail can be used by train commuters to get to and from Greytown. The town boasts charming restored Victorian buildings, boutique shopping and award-winning cafes and bakeries.

The Trail is suitable for walking, prams, and road and mountain bikes. It is not suitable for racing bikes, horses or motorbikes, and dogs must be on the leash at all times.
