MUKA YOUTH PRINTS 2011

For the last 25 years Muka Youth Prints have exhibited original stone lithography exclusively for young people. The muka youth print shows constitute New Zealand’s longest ongoing art-event, the project has now put nearly 40 000 valuable works of art in the hands of young people and their families!!!

Over 100 New Zealand and 60 top international artists have contributed including Dennis Watkins, John Reynolds, Gretchen Albrecht, Peter Roche and Dick Frizzell.

Muka Gallery tours the country every year with a new set of 40 litho’s, providing an opportunity for young people (aged 5-18 inclusive) to purchase lithographic artworks in an environment where adults are not allowed.

“The method of exhibition allows young people to develop a unique awareness of art that cannot be taught” says co-founder and Muka director Magda Van Gils who has been involved in the project since 1986. “By entering the room without adults, and with an opportunity to choose, young people really engage with the works of art, on their own terms.”
In some cases generations of people have now participated, purchasing the works, gradually building up a collection over time.
Patrons have observed that the choices reflect current individual personality, interests and provide inspiration over time.

Despite the economic downturn the youth prints’ popularity continues to rise every year. This drive in popularity may be due to Muka’s continued effort to ensure that the works are kept affordable (currently $65). It seems that in a world where consumer goods are ever more readily available, young people more and more are appreciating the value of original art work and the ideas they inspire.

The Muka Youth Prints Exhibition will be stopping in Ashburton on Wednesday 9th November 12:00 – 6:00pm – one day only.
