Operation & temporary diversion
route update
Activity at the slip face is back into
full swing, with the excavators resuming work at the middle
of the slope removing the rocky outcrop material. This work
will continue for the next three to four weeks (weather
dependent) to help stabilise this middle slip face area.
This work is technically challenging and needs to be
undertaken steadily due to the inherent dangers of working
around the slip face that is still active. The slip face
material is fine rock shale and therefore breaks apart
easily. The excavators have a wide platform to work on to
provide a stable environment to work within. To date we
have removed approximately 34,000 cubic metres of material
some of which has been used to fill out the temporary road
and the remainder has been taken to disposal sites nearby.
The 24/7 opening of the temporary road last Thursday has
provided much relief to motorists. Over the last week we
have seen an increase in traffic using the road. Heavy rain
over the last week has caused some parts of the road’s toe
to scour because of the Opato Stream water levels rising.
We have filled out areas where scouring has occurred and at
the same time we have put in some additional support
material to minimise any further scouring.
