Environment Court Decision On Variation 11 Requires Careful Analysis

Newcrest Group, who have been planning a six-storey office block project on the Wellington waterfront, is now taking advice on the implications of yesterday’s Environment Court decision that rejected the Council’s Variation 11 district plan change.

“We need to carefully consider the implications of the Court’s finding and analyse what exactly it considers appropriate for the site,” says Newcrest Development Director Lincoln Fraser. “The Court’s decision has brought some clarity to the situation but it is obvious that the project, in its current form, is not workable and that is a disappointment.”

Newcrest had planned an eco friendly, seismically advanced office building with an all weather indoor public plaza on the ground floor of Site 10. The Court’s decision appears to rule this out and the company will need to analyse its options and review these with Wellington Waterfront and Council before making a final decision on the project’s future. It will make an announcement some time in the next few weeks. In the meantime Newcrest will make no further comment on the issue.
