Man With Severed Artery Flown From Kaikoura

A Life Flight Trust transferred a man suffering from a severe arm injury early this morning.
 
The Wellington-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic onboard, was tasked to fly to Kaikoura to transfer a severely injured man.  Normally the Christchurch Westpac Rescue Helicopter would respond to Kaikoura but they were unable to fly due to fog in Christchurch.
 
A Kaikoura based St John Ambulance crew was called to a Kaikoura address and found the 36 year old Kaikoura man suffering from a badly lacerated arm including a severed artery.  The ambulance crew stabilised the injury and transported to the local Kaikoura Hospital.  The helicopter was called because the injured man will require surgery at a tertiary hospital.
 
The man was flown to Wellington Hospital, arriving at about 3:15am, and he is currently being treated in the Emergency Department.
