Damage to Christchurch's Infrastructure And The Resilience Of Networks

ROTORUA. 27 September 2012 The extent of damage to water and roading infrastructure as a result of the Christchurch earthquakes was examined in a presentation to the Water New Zealand’s Conference in Rotorua today

Warren Ladbrook from CERA graphically illustrated the extent of the damage and discussed the approach to reconstruction and the resilience of such infrastructure.

He outlined the following Christchurch city statistics and discussed progress on the $2B reconstruction of water, wastewater and stormwater networks, bridges, roads and retaining walls.

• 52% of Christchurch’s urban sealed roads were damaged
• 30 bridges needed repair
• Over 600 retaining walls needed to be replaced or repaired
• 51 kms of water supply mains were damaged
• 22 of 175 fresh water wells were damaged
• 528 km of the wastewater network were damaged
• 100 plus sewer pumping stations had to be replaced or repaired
