My Fire, in Wellington on TV Ones New Zealands Got Talent - Episode 4

Mangaweka Yellow Church Gallery Owner, Rangitikei’s Got Talent Judge & Performer, Rangitikei District Councillor and Mayoral candidate, Richard Aslett was featured on this Sunday’s TV One’s New Zealand’s Got Talent show (episode four). His appearance singing a cover of the Doors – Light my Fire, at the Wellington Saint James Theatre was recorded on the 10th of August, and has been a closely guarded secret since that date. This followed on from a successful advancement after attending the Rotorua leg of the nationwide NZGT auditions earlier this year. “Watching New Zealand’s Got Talent last year on TV looked such great fun and really entertaining, and I thought I just had to be a part of it all this year, so I decided to give it a shot and travel up to the auditions in Rotorua” said Richard. “I didn’t really know what to expect, and there were some other really great performers there, but I just gave it my all, and the judge must have liked what she saw, as later in June I got the message saying I had got through to the next round !” Richard then went on to appear with 100’s of other hopefuls over a weekend in early August in Wellington, in front of a packed live audience of over 2000 people, and the judges Rachel Hunter, Jason Kerrison, and Cris Judd, at the St James Theatre, Wellington. Richard is better known as a rock drummer for the Taihape Musicians Club house band, yet this performance saw him take the microphone, to sing lead vocals, with maraca’s as accompaniment “It was all quite nerve racking, as I am more used to being sat hidden away behind the drum kit, so I rehearsed the song daily” said Richard. Although the performance seemed to go well, had the crowd dancing, and all the judges commented on what a great voice he had, unfortunately he didn’t make it through to the semi-finals. “There was an overabundance of solo singers with backing tracks, and some very very stiff competition, but regardless of the result it was an awesome experience and was truly a whole lot of fun. Rachel Hunter suggested I come back next year with my drums instead of my maracas! And that is the plan – I’ll be back! “.
