Algal bloom eases

The Otago Regional Council (ORC) has today advised Waihola businesses that toxic algae levels from a recent bloom have declined to safe levels in the area.

Warning signs were erected last month, when dangerous levels of algal bloom (scientifically known as cyanobacteria) were found in Lake Waihola and Tomahawk Lagoon.

These algae can produce toxins which may cause illness, such as skin reactions, in people and animals.

ORC director of environmental information and science John Threlfall said recent tests show the levels in both areas has fallen, reducing the risk of people and animals becoming ill from the algal bloom.

“As both locations have had three consecutive test samples with low toxicity counts, we can now remove the warning signs,” Dr Threlfall said.

However, he stressed that an algal bloom could return at any time. If people see large amounts of bright green algae they should contact ORC.

The council plans to take down the warning signs later today, but will continue to monitor Lake Waihola and Tomahawk in case the algal bloom reappears, Dr Threlfall said.
