FISHING PROTEST - June 6th Victoria Park at 10a.m.

FISHING PROTEST - June 6th Victoria Park at 10a.m.

This coming Saturday the 6th of June; Fish Fight Aotearoa are holding a Protest Rally'

for all those interested persons that support a 12 nautical mile commercial fisher exclusion zone to be implemented around the New Zealand Coastline.

With current practices of overfishing, discard and the potential extinction of many inshore fish species FFA are advocating that the exclusion zone be implemented to protect the fishery and allow these species to recover.

They are also asking for a 'mammal reserve' on the west coast of the North Island for at least 25nm from New Plymouth to the Manukau Heads as current reports say the Maui Dolphin is also near extinction.

This has come about as the recreational fishers are tired of the standard responses from MPI to the wasteful practices by commercial fishers made law by MPI,

The Protest Rally will be held at Victoria Park, Auckland on the motorway end, at 10am.

FFA is also concerned that proposed 'live fin fish' exports using the new Precision Seafood Harvesting system may end up as 'live fish' items on Asian restaurant menus in countries where the Fishing Companies plan to export live fish too.

In China, chefs have figured out a way to keep a fish alive as it gets deep fried and then waits to be eaten.

Ikizukuri is the preparation of made from live seafood. The most popular sea animal used in ikizukuri (sashimi) is finfish but crayfish is also used.

The practice is controversial owing to concerns about the animal's suffering, as it is still alive when served.

The most common way is to serve the live fish on a plate with the filleted meat on top of the body.

Eating fish alive is illegal in many countries including NZ and Australia.
