Mayor disregards concerns of vulnerable Aucklanders

Mayor disregards concerns of vulnerable Aucklanders

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Phil Goff has shown extraordinary disregard for vulnerable families in delaying research on the effects of his regional fuel tax on the poorest Aucklanders, says the Auckland Ratepayers’ Alliance.

Ratepayers’ Alliance spokesperson Jo Holmes says, “When asked to examine how fuel tax would affect the poorest Aucklanders, the Mayor made a commitment to do so, but then behind the scenes chose to delay and obfuscate. Vulnerable families will rightly feel abandoned.”

“The Mayor acts like he’s a character on House of Cards, making false promises and keeping inconvenient facts out of the public eye. His cold political tactics might make for good TV drama, but they don’t make for good policy.”

“If Phil Goff simply met his commitment to cut waste by 3-6%, the regional fuel tax would not be needed to pay for infrastructure. Instead of cutting costs, he’s whacking struggling Aucklanders with a new tax of up to $452 a year. It’s a disgrace.”
