Wellington demo against fascism and gender violence in Brazil

What: Wellington and world-wide protest gathering in support of Brazilian women together against fascism

When: 12.30pm Friday 28 September 2018

Where: Outside the Brazilian Embassy building 10 Customhouse Quay, Wellington

This Friday Brazilian women around the world will protest against the alt-right presidential election candidate, the fascist Jair Bolsonaro. The Wellington Brazilian community invites individuals of all genders, sex orientation, immigrants, minorities, people of all religions, age, races and ethnicities for a peaceful action against fascism outside the Brazilian Embassy.

As in many other countries Brazil is facing the rise of neo-fascism, which is reflected in politics and in the society as a whole. Jair Bolsonaro, a popular candidate in the Brazilian presidential election on 7 October 2018, represents a worrying move towards misogyny, racism, class prejudice and against any kind of intolerance.

“It is a setback for minorities and for all citizens of the world who respect human rights and who want a more fair and peaceful society,” says Brazilian-born Wellington resident Vera Padilha.

“On Friday we will stand for tolerance, peace, and equality. We will reaffirm our request for justice for Marielle Franco, a Rio councillor brutally murdered over six months ago” says Ms Padilha. “At the same time we'll celebrate 125 years since the advent of voting in New Zealand Aotearoa.”
