Waioeka Road is down to one lane following the earlier serious crash involving a truck and trailer.

The driver, who was the single-occupant, has been airlifted to hospital in Gisborne in a serious condition.

It is expected the truck and trailer will be removed from the Waiokea River later today which will likely involve a further road closure.

Motorists are asked to continue to avoid the area.
