Ditch The Throwaway Cups And Bring It (A Reusable) Instead!

Don’t opt for a handful of landfill when ordering your morning coffee - bring a reusable cup instead.

This Plastic Free July, Hamilton City Council and cafes in the central city are partnering to promote reducing the number of single-use cups Hamilton Kirikiriroa sends to landfill.

Participating cafes are rewarding customers who bring their reusable cup in July:

Council’s Head of Resource Recovery, Sarah Wilson, explains why the common takeaway cup cannot be recycled.

“Although single-use cups are made from paper, the insides are lined with plastic to make them waterproof. These materials can’t be separated which makes them unrecyclable.”

Cups marketed as “compostable” have a bio-plastic lining and cannot be recycled either. Commercial compost facilities are difficult to access so many of these cups end up in landfill.

Over the last 12 months, Hamilton has sent more than 16.7 million kilograms of waste to landfill. As a country, we send around 295 million single use cups to landfill each year.

“Opting for a reusable cup may seem like a small change, but if enough of us do it, it can have a big impact,” said Wilson.
