The learners’ pool at the Recreation Centre is now ready to welcome young swimmers back after being closed due to roof damage.

The pool was originally closed in 2023 following vandalism-related damage. During the course of repairs, additional issues were identified, prompting a more comprehensive refurbishment.

Local contractors Rigg-Zschokke led the repair and restoration works, that will ensure the facility meets the needs of the community well into the future.

The project was primarily funded by an insurance payout related to the vandalism incident, with an additional $30,000 contributed by Masterton District Council.

The pool will reopen on Monday for early childhood water safety and swim instruction.

Asset and Project Officer Alastair McDonald is pleased to see the work complete.

"Water safety is a critical life skill in New Zealand, and having this dedicated learners’ pool available again will make a real difference for local families and swim instructors."

The refurbished facility not only features a repaired and weather-tight roof but also improved lighting, ventilation, and cosmetic upgrades that make the space safer and more welcoming for both swimmers and instructors.

Community members are invited to visit the pool and check the updated swim class schedules via the Rec Centre's website or by contacting the centre directly.
