Bus Shelters Everywhere! |
||
Thomas Morgan, Wellington City Council Eastern Ward Candidate is putting his money on bus shelters in his pitch in the upcoming candidate information handbook suggesting that every local bus stop has a passenger shelter to allow better use of the service in unpleasant weather conditions.
“I for one don’t want to wait in pouring rain for a bus and the lack of shelters has been an obvious issue sitting in front of us for decades yet not recognised as a critical issue. In any system identifying pinch points can make all the difference and the simple matter of waiting at a bus stop must influence bus use.” He said.
Morgan noted that there seemed to be few shelters in any one roadway and when asked about the cost Morgan suggested that it would likely be very low as the shelters would carry advertising which would likely cover the cost of the shelter along with additional income to the council.
“The flow-on effects of higher bus use in unpleasant weather would likely be a decrease in traffic density, fewer accidents, reduced vehicle emissions, faster travel times, improved public safety and a better passenger experience.” He said.
”Advice from council suggests that shelters with advertising are already provided by the council, likely allowing further ones to be installed at every stop under the same or similar current arrangements.
“It is possible that some sites will be difficult however there’s nothing like a challenge and innovation is the cornerstone of the Kiwi experience.
“Hopefully the policy will be considered across the country.” He said.
More of Morgan’s ideas can be found here and of course he would rather like the No.1 vote of Wellington’s Eastern Ward residents:- https://www.facebook.com/VoteThomasMorgan
