A serious vehicle crash has resulted in the closure of State Highway 1 near Dunedin.

Emergency services are at the scene of the crash, close to Allanton, that occurred about 1.30pm. The road closure is in place between Riverside Road and Law Road.

Motorists should expect delays and should avoid the area if possible. The detour for southbound traffic is Riccarton Road to SH87, SH87 to Outram, then to Allanton Road, Centre Road and back onto SH1 in Allanton. Reverse for northbound traffic.

The road is expected to be closed for several hours, and an update will be provided when the situations changes.
