Snowfall is starting to have an impact in the central South Island this morning, with roading restrictions going into place at one of the alpine passes.

Due to snow conditions, chains are now essential and there is a ‘no towing vehicles’ restriction in place for State Highway 73 between Otira and Arthur’s Pass. Road users are asked to take extra care when travelling through the area.

MetService has road snowfall warnings in place for alpine passes across the South Island today.

There is also a strong wind watch in place this morning for the Canterbury high country about and north of Aoraki-Mount Cook, and for the Buller and Grey districts, and Westland district north of the glaciers. Northwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
