George Hickton, Chair Of The Kāpiti Coast Tourism Advisory Board |
||
It is with great sadness that Council acknowledges the passing of George Hickton, Chair of the Kāpiti Coast Tourism Advisory Board.
George’s impact on New Zealand’s tourism and business landscape has been immense. Over his broad and distinguished career, he served as Chair of Hawke’s Bay Tourism and Wētā Workshop, and as a Director at Kapiti Island Nature Tours and Te Puia in Rotorua.
He is perhaps best remembered for his decade as Chief Executive of Tourism New Zealand, where he launched the world-renowned 100% Pure New Zealand campaign – a legacy that continues to shape how our country is seen globally.
George’s career extended beyond tourism. He established New Zealand Employment and Income Support Services (WINZ) and previously held senior leadership roles in the motor industry, including Sales and Marketing Director for Honda NZ. His contributions were recognised with the Sir Jack Newman Award and his induction into the New Zealand Marketing Hall of Fame.
In recent years, George brought his expertise and passion to Kāpiti, serving as Chair of the Kāpiti Coast Tourism Advisory Board. The Board was established by the Economic Development Kotahitanga Board to provide strategic advice and industry insight. His leadership has helped guide the district’s tourism development and strengthen collaboration across the sector. He was a true champion of Kāpiti and the opportunities ahead for our visitor economy.
He will be remembered as a visionary leader and a generous mentor to many. His wisdom, warmth, and belief in people will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with George’s family, friends, and colleagues at this sad time.
