In an exciting step forward for Kaipara, funding has been confirmed for two of the Roads of National Significance (RoNS) that comprise the Northland Corridor.

The next stages of the work for the Te Hana to Port Marsden Highway (including an alternative route to the Brynderwyn Hills), and the Port Marsden Highway to Whangārei have been included in the latest announcement of funding approved by the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) Board. These roads build on the Puhoi to Warkworth section of the Northland Corridor - a 100km strategic route linking Auckland and Whangārei.

Their milestone represents significant progress towards a single highway journey from Auckland to Whangārei, significantly reducing travel times between these locations, while also providing a safer, more resilient route.

Kaipara District Council Mayor-elect Jonathan Larsen says the announcement is excellent news for the district.

“This funding brings Kaipara one step closer to New Zealand’s largest commercial centre Auckland, as well as the rest of the country,” says Mayor-elect Larsen.

“The benefits of the Northland Corridor for the whole of Kaipara are huge, with the endorsed investment case showing travel times significantly reduced, unlocking major opportunities for residents, businesses and visitors alike.

It’s really exciting to see this project now moving at pace. This in conjunction with new commercial and industrial land airmarked to be rezoned through the Proposed District Plan, provides Kaipara with a competitive strategic advantage.”

“It’s safe to say that the stars are really starting to align for Kaipara,” says Mayor-elect Larsen.

NZTA has said their next steps include property acquisition, with consents and designation for an alternative to the Brynderwyn Hills (section 2b) expected to be lodged using the Fast-track Approvals Act (FTAA) by the end of March 2026. Designations for the remainder of the corridor are expected to be lodged via the FTAA by late 2026.
