Temporary Waterfront Fencing To Be Removed, Starting Tomorrow |
||
From Tuesday 4 November, Wellington City Council will be removing the temporary fencing on the waterfront. It is expected to be completely removed by Wednesday evening (5 November).
In the 2024-34 City Council Long-term Plan, $7.1 million was allocated for improvements to waterfront public safety. Almost $5 million has been invested to-date in enhanced waterfront lighting across the promenades, enhancing waterfront safety at night by making sure people can clearly see each other and clearly see the wharf’s edge.
There will be occasions where temporary fencing is installed for specific events that require an additional level of protection alongside the lighting. These events are decided by the type and number of attendees.
Currently, the first event with additional fencing will be the New Year’s Eve fireworks, where attendees of all ages watch the display over the harbour.
The Council is also taking the opportunity to trial some alternative health and safety measures for events, such as using security guards to assist in monitoring the waterfront during larger evening events. This will also help staff to understand the level of near-miss events and the impact the enhanced lighting has on reducing these.
With the fencing coming down and summer fast approaching, please continue to take care and look out for each other when enjoying the waterfront.
