The country’s peak body for medical sexual assault clinicians is urging victims and survivors to trust frontline police with their complaints. Data shows complaints typically spike during the Christmas and New Year holiday season.

This follows recent allegations of sexual misconduct at senior levels within the NZ Police and the Independent Police Complaints Authority (IPCA) findings of systemic failure in response to the allegations.

Medical Sexual Assault Clinicians Aotearoa (MEDSAC) is disappointed that these failures have occurred despite decades of work to strengthen systems and training. The failings have shaken public confidence in the NZ Police and highlighted the need for continued systemic improvement.

“While these concerns relate to senior leadership, MEDSAC emphasises that these issues do not reflect the professionalism and dedication of frontline police” says MEDSAC Chair Dr Kate Taylor, and furthermore, “Survivors should feel confident in reporting to police or accessing specialist services, knowing that frontline teams remain committed to supporting them.”

MEDSAC General Manager Hayley Samuel says victim/survivors deserve a system they can trust. “We want to reassure victim/survivors that frontline police can be trusted and are professional. MEDSAC will continue collaborating with the NZ Police and other agencies to support best practices.”

MEDSAC is calling on the NZ Police to commit to systemic improvements at Police National Headquarters with adequate resources and clear complaint procedures.
