Waikato District Council has launched a play map and kids summer passport to encourage whaanau to enjoy the warm weather and explore the parks, lakes, walkways and hidden gems in their own backyard.

The Play Map, which is now live on Council’s website, brings together swimming spots, pools, boat ramps, playgrounds, skateparks, dog-friendly areas, walkways and more, all in one place to make planning a day out simple.

“Whether you’ve lived here your whole life or you’re new to the district, there’s always something fresh to discover,” says Mayor Aksel.

“Our district is full of places for families and friends to enjoy together.”

Tamariki can take part with the kids summer passport activity booklet, available at all Council libraries. Those who complete the activities and return their booklet will receive a Summer Explorer Certificate and go in the draw to win a kids’ skateboard and safety gear, supported by Wrong Skate Shop in Raglan.

Fifty passports also include a free child pool pass redeemable at Ngaaruawaahia, Huntly, or Tuakau Pools.

“We want kids to explore with their whaanau and feel proud of their community,” Mayor Aksel says.

“Seeing the district through a child’s eyes brings back that sense of wonder and excitement – and almost all of the activities in the passports are not only fun but free, so available to all.”

Residents can get started by visiting the play map online and picking up a kids summer passport from their local Council library.

Play your way this summer and discover something new in the Waikato district.
