Following the resignation of Cr Jamie Falloon at the beginning of February, the by-election process for the vacant Whakaoriori Masterton District Council at-large seat is now underway.

Candidate nominations open on Thursday (12 February) for one month, with postal voting beginning in mid‑April, and closing at 12 noon on Friday, 22 May.

Candidates must be on a New Zealand electoral roll and nominated by two people eligible to vote in the Masterton District – on the General or Māori rolls for Masterton District. Everyone on these rolls is eligible to vote in the by-election.

People can check or update their enrolment details on the Electoral Commission website or copies of the Masterton District Preliminary Electoral Roll will be available for inspection at Masterton District Library (45 Chapel Street), or Council offices at 161 Queen Street, or Waiata House (27 Lincoln Road) and at the Castlepoint and Riversdale Beach Stores.

Mayor Bex Johnson encourages community members who want to make a meaningful contribution to the future of the District to consider standing.

“Being part of the Council allows you to represent your community and help shape the future of Masterton, so we remain responsive to the needs of our people,” said.

“It’s an exciting opportunity, and we welcome nominations from all walks of life to ensure the full diversity of our community is reflected.

“It’s also very important that our communities get out and vote when the time comes. If you didn’t vote last time, or you’re not yet enrolled, make sure you get enrolled and have your say during the by‑election.”

More information about the by‑election will be available on the Masterton District Council website – www.mstn.govt.nz – and will be updated throughout the process.
