Severe Weather On The Way – Northlanders Take Care |
||
Drivers should take extra care in Northland this week, with an Orange Severe Weather Warning in place from tomorrow evening through till Friday morning (7pm Wednesday 25 March – 9am Friday 27 March).
The current weather system is similar in nature to the January weather event, with MetService forecasting prolonged heavy rain. In January, the situation escalated to a Red Warning and resulted in widespread impacts, so road users need to be prepared.
“Our teams are monitoring the network closely. While current warnings are below January’s peak severity, strong winds and prolonged rain mean drivers should expect possible disruption and plan accordingly,” says Kingston Brands, NZTA Journey Manager for Northland.
Locations that commonly experience surface flooding during heavy rain include Whakapara, Kaeo, and Rangiahua, and drivers should take extra care when travelling through these areas.
“We are urging people to drive to the conditions and consider delaying non‑essential travel during heavy rain. Do not drive through floodwater and follow all road signs and instructions, noting ongoing road works will also be on parts of the state highway network,” Mr Brands says.
Road users should keep an eye on the NZTA Journey Planner for live state highway conditions and stay across Metservice https://www.metservice.com/warnings and Northland Civil Defence updates https://www.facebook.com/civildefencenorthland/.
