A special ceremony held yesterday (14 April) at Mangamingi Marae in Raetihi welcomed eleven people from seven different countries as new New Zealand citizens.

The new citizens, originally from Germany, Northern Ireland, Namibia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Uruguay, and the United Kingdom, were joined by family and friends for the occasion.

Each took the formal step of either swearing allegiance to His Majesty King Charles III of New Zealand or making an official affirmation of citizenship before Mayor Weston Kirton, representing the New Zealand Government.

Mayor Kirton said holding citizenship ceremonies on local marae adds a distinctly Ruapehu flavour while acknowledging Te Tiriti o Waitangi - something deeply appreciated by those taking part.

“While the official ceremony follows a formal protocol, we make sure it is also warm, welcoming, and reflective of our local community. Holding it on a marae helps create that connection,” he said.

“Becoming a New Zealand citizen is a significant milestone. For many, it marks the end of a long journey toward making New Zealand their permanent home, and it is a privilege to share in that moment with them.”

Mayor Kirton said New Zealand’s growing diversity is one of its greatest strengths.

“We are fortunate to live in an increasingly diverse nation. People who leave their home countries often have many options, and we are proud they have chosen Aotearoa New Zealand to build their future.

“This diversity strengthens our resilience and adds to the vibrancy and richness of our society. We are proud to welcome these new citizens into our Ruapehu community.”
