Fares Increasing 3.1 Percent On 15 May 2026 |
||

Metlink public transport fares will increase by 3.1 percent on Friday 15 May, and the off‑peak Snapper fare discount will reduce from 30 to 20 percent.
The decision to adjust fares was a result of the Annual Fares Review – a policy requirement that ensures public transport fares keep pace with inflation and operating costs. The review helps ensure passengers contribute a balanced and sustainable share toward running and improving the network, alongside ratepayers, and other funding partners, including the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).
Greater Wellington Public Transport Committee Chair Ros Connelly says the Council made the decision to raise fares earlier this year.
"We resolved to raise fares prior to the current conflict in the Middle East to mitigate cost pressures and address revenue loss. Since then, the cost of diesel has skyrocketed, costing Metlink an extra $200,000 a week,” says Cr Connelly.
“Metlink understands the cost-of-living challenges that people are facing. However, even with the inflation-adjusted fares, using public transport saves personal fuel use and contributes to the running of the whole network.
“We are also having to balance fiscal responsibility and funding constraints with affordability, ensuring our fare revenue meets targets set by NZTA.”
From 15 May, the cost of a three‑zone trip will increase by 14 cents, bringing the peak adult Snapper fare to $4.67 for those travelling to the CBD from Miramar or Karori. For Wairarapa passengers travelling by train from Masterton to Wellington, the adult Snapper fare will rise by 56 cents to $18.50 at peak times.
